History is being made in front of our eyes.
Never before have we seen a Presidential administration so determined to deny reality. This is terrifying for what it portends for America and the world. If the media allows this it will destroy political discourse forever.
These people are going to brazenly lie until they are called brazen liars, by every respectable media outlet.
That word should be screaming from the front pages every single day.
Otherwise the damage these guys will do will far exceed what time they spend in office.
None of this should have come as a shock to the Washington press corps. Trump and his people did it all the way through the campaign. I think there was an assumption that they did it to win and that things would return to “normal” when the election was over. That was a gross misjudgement that ignored the nature of these people. They will not respect a single one of the normative behaviours the media evidently expects and the press corps has to get off the matt and realise who and what they are dealing with, or they’re going to get walked all over. They need to understand and call these people what they are; unrepentant bullshit artists.
Look there’s no point in sugar coating this or dancing around it, as so many media outlets seem like they want to do. This administration could not make it clearer about how it intends to handle facts. It will ignore them, distort them and even invent the ones it wants and needs to forward its agenda. When one of their pack described Spicer’s claims at the weekend as “alternative facts” that should have started alarm bells ringing loudly. Caught in an outright lie, they danced a little and wiggled free because the media was too shocked to react right.
They need to snap out of it right quick. These people are going to lie to them, constantly, on all matters great and small, and without even a hint of embarrassment. The lies Sean Spicer – already one of the most dishonest individuals ever to stand behind the press secretary podium – told on the size of the inauguration crowd are small fry.
The lies about the bigger stuff have already started.
This isn’t limited to America either. The BBC has actually published an article tonight which is headlined “Trump’s voter fraud claim ‘based on evidence’”. The headline writer ought to be fired for that. The BBC is repeating an assertion it knows to be absolute bullshit, perhaps to try and stay on the right side of “neutral.” But there is no neutral when someone is treating you, and everyone else, like a mug. You have to call that what it is. Other media outlets, here and in the United States, are falling into exactly the same trap. People won’t see the quotation marks in that headline; they’ll read that text and many of them will assume that this is a true story.
How much will these people get away with before the media gets its collective act together? Oh, I don’t mean the right-wing press; those guys got him elected by shilling bullshit and they will sustain him doing so. These people disgrace journalism and the purpose of the profession with every single word they write, barely a word of truth finding its way into their publications. It’s the rest of the media that has to get over its nerves and start punching back.
The press can’t deal with these people by the normal standards .This is not a normal Presidential administration. Trump is not a normal President. These people will run riot unless they are called out, fast, by the only people who are left with any chance of holding them to account. The longer the White House press corps and the rest of their profession allows this the more they will normalise it. If brazen lying becomes something they simply shrug their shoulders about, allowing them to file a dissent and no more than that then God help us all.
Time to face up to the reality of what we’re dealing with here; the force feeding of mendacity will be the daily ritual until the reporters stop smiling and then opening their mouths for it. It’s taken the internet to call these people deceitful bastards. That’s not right. The net is what spawned these folk in the first place.
This is when we’re looking to the mainstream press to fight the corner for all of us.
I can’t believe they have started out so weak.
